The elementary years are when children should be in an environment where they maintain and nurture a love of learning - not lose it.
Our 7- to 11-year-olds learn in a hands-on, mixed-age studio where curiosity sets the pace. Children work at their own level in reading, writing, and math, and spend their afternoons exploring the world through hands-on projects — building, experimenting, creating, and asking the kinds of questions that lead somewhere real. They learn because they want to, and because the work is genuinely interesting.
Along the way, Discovery learners begin to find their own voice. They take part in daily Socratic discussions, learn to listen as well as speak, work through disagreements with their friends, and start taking real ownership of their day. They make lasting friendships, support each other, and discover what they're drawn to and good at.
This is a learner-driven school, built on the belief that every child has a unique genius, and that the surest way to help them find it is to protect their love of learning, challenge them at the right level, and trust them to rise.
Each morning the Discovery studio has 2-3 hours of uninterrupted, self-directed time for core skills. They set daily goals and use a variety of hardcopy and online, adaptive self-paced programs to earn points, earn 'badges' for excellent work, and develop life skills in focus and mastery.
Holistic learning does not happen inside four-walls. Our Discovery studio goes on what we call 'Adventures' into the real-world, with hands-on, experiential learning that ties to our session theme and goals. We love to venture into our community to explore, learn, and grow (and practice our language skills!).
Every 6 weeks Learners demonstrate our "Learn to Do" pillar by hosting a public Exhibition or Children's Business Fair to demonstrate to parents and community members what they've learned for that session. We demonstrate mastery, competency and progress - we do not test or give homework.
Every afternoon, Learners collaborate and work on real-world projects, challenges, and Quests that are part of an overarching theme for each 6-week session. Final products are revealed at the public exhibitions. Projects span interest areas including the sciences, history, technology and the arts. We offer Art and PE every week.
English is our primary language , with Dutch as a commonly spoken second language in our studios. We understand the value of children becoming multi-lingual. Thus, given the nature of Curaçao and diversity of our families, we emphasize language arts, immersion experiences, and speaking, reading and writing in multiple languages.
"Learn to Be" is coveted at Acton Academy. We believe that one's character determines their destiny, not simply 'what they know'. Infused into everything we do, our learners develop and demonstrate important character traits as they walk their hero's journey and bravely change the world.
